84th anniversary of the arrival of the Czechoslovak Troops at Cholmondeley Castle in 1940

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us yesterday July 6th for the 84th anniversary of the arrival of the Czechoslovak🇨🇿 Troops at Cholmondeley Castle in 1940.
Each year we keep the promise made by George, the 5th Marquess of Cholmondeley, who offered the Czechoslovak Government in Exile the use of Cholmondeley Park for their Army to recover in, after the Battle of France.
‘I, or those who will come after me, shall forever, once a year, lay flowers 🌹at this Memorial which you will leave behind you here; the monument that is commemorating courageous people that suffer so greatly.’
The MAFCSV are proud to organise this event and welcome friends, old and new, to share this poignant ceremony, which was directed by Reverend Canon Christopher Samuels. When the Last post is played by Ted Fowles, and we stand silently remembering, it is easy to imagine the veterans camp around us and them going about their daily lives.
It is always a privilege to address the young cadets just before the event and explain to them why they are on parade, and how much their presence means to us, and would have meant to the veterans. If we don’t tell their story to the next generations, then it will simply disappear. I want to thank the Army Cadet Force (Nantwich) detachment, 100 Nantwich Squadron Air Training Corps, 310 (Widnes) Squadron Air Training Corps and the Cheshire Drums and Bugles for a superb parade, which was led expertly by Parade Marshall Mr Timmins.
We were delighted to welcome back the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire Lady Redmond and her husband Lord Redmond. In her address the Lord Lieutenant spoke of the importance of the continuing bond between the Czechoslovak Veterans and the local community that began back in 1940. A bond and friendship 🤝 which was evident throughout the afternoon.
In his speech, His Excellency the Slovak Ambassador, Dr. Ondrejcsák, reflected on the reverence we hold for our veterans and all those who continue to fight for freedom and democracy today, especially in light of the current situation in Ukraine. Evil never sleeps it just looks for new places to manifest itself. Like our veterans we need to be ready to challenge and fight it whenever it raises its head.
General Beran the Czech Defence Attaché spoke of the importance of having Allies today, just as Czechoslovakia had during WWII. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Czech Republic joining NATO this year, shows that legacy continues and the high regard and importance they place on it.
Wreaths and tributes were placed by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Cheshire, His Excellency the Slovak Ambassador, and Colonel Sliacky, General Beran on behalf of the Czech Embassy, on behalf of the Army, Colonel Forbes and on behalf of the Royal Air Force, Air Commodore Sansom, the Mayor of Cheshire East, Councillor Houston, the Chairman of Cholmondeley and Chorley Parish Council, Mr. Hopley, the County Chairman of the Royal British Legion Cheshire, Mr. Bagshaw and on behalf of the Royal Air Force Association, Mr. Revell, the Chairman of Royal British Legion Bunbury, and the Chairman of the Royal British Legion Nantwich, the Polish Airmen’s Association, the Friends of the Czechoslovak Memorial Fountain, Leamington Spa and the Memorial Association for Free Czechoslovak Veterans. There were flowers 🌺 from the Czech School and Community Manchester, from veteran’s wife, Sheila Novak and the Knotek family.
We were delighted to be joined by the new Consul for the Czech Embassy Manchester Mrs. Jana Karla Režná. We must mention Paul McCabe and the Friends of Waterloo Tennis Club in Liverpool, who cycle 🚴‍♂️down every year to pay their respects to the veterans, no matter what the weather. Our event just wouldn’t be the same without them.
Thanks to Helen Partington for making the most delicious Czech biscuits and sandwiches to go alongside the fantastic afternoon tea 🫖 🍰 created by Tracey and the Castle Café team. (I definitely recommend the cream, jam and strawberry scones!)
Also to the Cholmondeley estate team who support us every year and help keep the memorial and surrounding area looking smart. It is hugely appreciated.
Finally, to Lieutenant Colonel Nick Southward O.B.E, for organising the event so well and supporting me to deliver it. His attention to detail always ensures it all goes to plan on the day. I hope he enjoys a well-earned break now.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back next year for the 85th anniversary.
Thank you to Georgia from 310 Squadron who took many of the photos attached today.
